Howald, residential renovation

We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us.

Winston Churchill, 1943

The renovation of habitable attic space in a 2nd floor townhouse in Howald.

This project involved the renovation of 70m2 habitable surface area in a 2nd floor townhouse in Luxembourg. The out-dated, unwelcoming 1970’s flat was completely refurbished to create a very attractive and modern two-bedroom accommodation. Based in the popular and ever developing Howald district the refurbishment also required replacement of the leaking roof. The existing wood structure and supporting trusses on the second floor were maintained, locally replacing individual roof supports that were in bad condition due to regular water infiltration. The trusses were treated and integrated into the new design solution. One of the trusses provides an attractive open divide between the living space and kitchen area while the other gives a rustic touch to one of the otherwise large and simple bedrooms. All internal finishes were replaced with high quality installations, a very simple yet appealing and practical open kitchen and a bathroom layout making use of every corner in the narrow space. The overall result is a very spacious, light and lasting property within an older building in a very valuable part of Luxembourg City.
